About KAP
KAP: Ketamine Assisted Psychotehrapy
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a type of PAT (Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy. KAP is a specialized mental health treatment that combines the rapid-acting pharmacological effects of low-dose ketamine with traditional psychotherapy to treat conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction.
While ketamine alone can provide short-term symptom relief by increasing neuroplasticity (helping the brain form new, healthier connections), integrating it with psychotherapy allows patients to process deep-seated emotional trauma and insights that emerge during the session, leading to more sustainable, long-term recovery.
-
Preparation-Builds rapport and sets intentions with a therapist to maximize therapeutic gains.
-
Administration-Sub-anesthetic ketamine is administered (via IM injection or lozenge), inducing a calm, dream-like state.
-
Integration-Post-session psychotherapy to process insights and translate them into lasting behavioral change.
Key Aspects of KAP
-
Altered State of Consciousness: At sub-anesthetic doses, ketamine creates a dissociative, dream-like state that reduces psychological defenses, allowing patients to confront painful memories or emotions without feeling overwhelmed.
-
Supportive Environment: KAP is conducted by trained therapists in a comfortable setting, often involving music and eyeshades to encourage an internal experience.
-
Rapid Relief: Unlike traditional antidepressants, ketamine can produce improvements in mood within hours or days.
-
Holistic Approach: Unlike simple infusions, KAP acts as a "container" for deep emotional processing and behavioral change.
What KAP Treats
KAP is commonly used for:
-
Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)
-
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
-
Severe Anxiety Disorders
-
Addiction
-
Existential Distress (e.g., in palliative care patients)
KAP is generally considered a highly effective, safe, and innovative approach to mental health, but it requires careful screening by a medical professional before treatment.
